Manipulation of vegetation throughout history has had mixed results because of lack of biological and ecological information, narrow goals, a lack of ecosystem perspective, and limited technologies.  As a result, there are numerous examples on “unintended consequences” when viewed historically.  However, each era (eradication, control, and management) needs to be considered as a result of prevailing paradigms at the time.
